The international order is undergoing profound transformation. Armed conflicts, geopolitical tensions, and declining trust among international actors continue to challenge diplomacy and multilateral cooperation. At the same time, mediation has emerged as an increasingly important instrument for conflict prevention, dialogue, and sustainable peacebuilding.

Against this backdrop, Der Divan – The Arab Cultural House Berlin is pleased to host an evening of discussion with H.E. Dr. Abulaziz bin Mohamed Al-Horr, Director of the Diplomatic Institute in Doha.

The conversation is inspired by the recently published book Qatar’s Mediation Legacy: A Historical and Archival Perspective, which explores the evolution of Qatar’s mediation diplomacy through a historical and institutional lens. The book examines Qatar’s role in international mediation efforts while reflecting on the essential foundations of successful diplomacy: trust, neutrality, institutional learning, and the preservation of diplomatic experience for future generations.

The discussion will address the challenges facing contemporary diplomacy, the growing role of small states in an increasingly multipolar world, and the conditions under which mediation can contribute to lasting conflict resolution. It will also explore what today’s diplomats can learn from past peace processes in addressing the complex crises of the twenty-first century.

The discussion will be moderated by former German Ambassador Hans-Udo Muzel, whose extensive diplomatic experience and longstanding engagement with the Middle East will provide a distinguished framework for the evening’s dialogue.
