Der Divan – The Arabic Cultural House- sincerely invites
you
to a lecture by
Dr. Amany Abdelrazek-Alsiefy and Dr. Cordula Lemke
entitled “Modern Egyptian Women, Fashion and Faith”
Dr. Amany Abdelrazek-Alsiefy will discuss Egyptian Muslim women’s dress as a social, political, and ideological signifier of changing attitudes toward Western modernity. She will also explore dresses as a feminist act, provide insights into the power and limits of legal regulations and cultural boundaries in modern Egypt, and present a nuanced narrative beyond the binary view of the supposedly modest, oppressed traditional Muslim woman versus the modern Western woman.
The book presentation will be followed by a discussion with Dr. Cordula Lemke, moderated by journalist Ewald König.
Dr. Amany Abdelrazek-Alsiefy is a writer and lecturer at the Zentrum für Transdisziplinäre Geschlechterstudien at Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. Her academic pursuits encompass a broad spectrum of fields, including gender studies, postcolonial literature, secularization, and fashion theories.
Dr. Cordula Lemke is a lecturer of English literature and culture at the Institute for English Philology at the Free University of Berlin. Her research focuses on postcolonial studies, gender studies, literary theory, and English literature and culture of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.
